About BMDCSEW

  Current Board

We are an organization dedicated to protecting the best interests of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Founded in 1977, we are an AKC licensed regional Bernese Mountain Dog club. We are also recognized by the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America.

Our membership includes people who are involved in breeding, showing and all areas of training, as well as those whose Berners are cherished family members. As stated in our Constitution, the BMDCSEW conducts matches and specialty shows according to American Kennel Club rules.

Club events provide Bernese owners and enthusiasts with opportunities to join in social activities, and educate members and others concerning Bernese Mountain Dogs and the responsibilities of dog ownership. Programs and activities are held throughout the year and are announced in the bi-monthly club newsletter, the Yodels.

In February at our annual awards meeting, we recognize BMDCSEW dogs who have earned titles in all areas during the previous year, as well as those who have performed public service as therapy dogs. The first weekend in March the club hosts a Regional Specialty show. A spring fun match is held in April/May; June activities may include a club picnic or agility or drafting workshop; in September Bernerfest is held. Bernerfest is an all day event with many dog activities for all including a draft test, match and training, grooming or other workshops.

The club's Annual Meeting is held in November. All general meetings include both a business meeting and an educational program of general interest to the membership. Past programs have covered a wide range of topics related to health, behavior, training, showing, grooming, and breeding. Guests are always welcome to attend our meetings. Visit our Calendar of Events for details.

Any person with an interest in Bernese Mountain Dogs is welcome to join our club. You do not need to own a Berner but if you are considering getting a Berner, joining the club is a good way to learn more about the breed and become acquainted with local breeders.

The BMDCSEW actively supports research and data collection efforts toward the goal of eliminating several serious health problems that afflict the Bernese Mountain Dogs (BMD). The Berner-Garde Foundation is a nonprofit tax exempt foundation, to further develop the data base through continuing data collection, verification and dissemination to breeders and researchers. We encourage all club members, both breeder and owners, to submit data on their dogs.

The BMDCSEW encourages its members to have all dogs, including non-breeding animals, evaluated for genetic ailments. Hip and elbow dysplaysia are evaluated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

Help for New Bernese Owners If you are dealing with a problem situation with your dog ---whether related to health, behavior or training--- we suggest you first contact your breeder about the problem. In addition, the BMDCSEW has experienced people who can advise you and refer you to training classes in your area. Contact any officer or committee chair for assistance.

The BMDCSEW offers a Breeder Referral Service For those who are looking for a Berner puppy. Breeder Referral maintains a list of Bernese Mountain Dog breeders within the club who have or who are planning litters. All breeders listed must be members in good standing of the BMDCSEW.
